They left on a warm and clear morning. The unseasonal cold gave way to unseasonal warmth, and the snow melted quickly. The waterfall thundered and the river roared, gorged by the sudden thaw. It was still winter—the trees were barren and spring was a dream away—but the worst of it was over.

Li Ming and Jingyi travelled with Tao Jun, Ji Ping, and the villagers for many li until they reached the branching road that lead towards the city of An’lin. It was here that the group parted ways. Jingyi to her brother and the Righteous Will company. Tao Jun and the villagers to the local imperial garrison. Li Ming for paths unknown. An uncertain knot gripped at the swordsman. For the first time in a long while, the open road felt intimidating, suffocating.

“I’ll keep an ear out for her,” Tao Jun said, sensing the swordsman’s apprehension.

“Watch out for rebels,” Li Ming said.

“Farewell brother! We’ll see each other soon,” Tao Jun urged his horse on.

A few paces away, the Cats begged Jingyi to take them on as disciples again. They bowed repeatedly, scurrying in front of her to be noticed as she walked.

“Please, Shifu Bai, we will be faithful students.”

“Shifu, we promise to do no harm.”

“Shifu, we will obey your every command.”

“No,” she said without even looking at them.

“Shifu!” they cried.
